Katie- Running the Pine Bush in the New Merrell Pace Glove
The pine bush is a 5 toes trail (see earlier post for the Auyer trail rating guide). It is comprised of rolling sand dunes in a rare pine-barrens eco-system (smallbany nerd fact). There are some wooded parts that feel more like running in the woods, but even those trails will leave you with all 5, well 10 toes intact!
Merrell Pace Glove Review
LOVE this shoe. It is a minimalist trail shoe, without toe separation. It has a roomy toe-box and fits, well… like a glove. I really love the way that it fits snuggly against the arch. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t padding in the arch, this is still a minimalist shoe. The sole (made by vibram) rises slightly at the arch making the shoe feel like a 2nd skin. If you don’t want to fully commit to a 5-finger shoe, I highly recommend this, even if you don’t want to run trails. I think it would work well on the roads too.
After running 3-ish miles through the beautiful pine bush, I realized (the next day) that trail running really is a different beast. My WHOLE body was sore the next day. You use your arms to propel up hills, and your feet move in ways far different from road running. What I am finding as I try to reach my goal of being a trail runner is that it is a total body work out. It challenges your whole body in a way that road running cannot.
Tomorrow we run a 10k, my first 10k in VFF’s and the first race in my Bikila’s. I will be back to let you know how it goes!!
Oh and a kudos to the St John’s/St Ann’s outreach center for the best schwag award to-date!!
