Katie – freihofer’s run for women
First race without my partner, because well, he has a Y chromosome, and this a run for women, by women. It was 4,000 ladies, and what should have been really fun, was not so much.
I had to cram my way into my designated spot (a projected 25-29 minute 5k), and then waited for 18 minutes for the race to start. As the horn sounded and we walked forward, I saw a small girl fall, and almost get trampled (I heard that another runner fell immediately, and likely broke an ankle). I spent the first 2.5 miles jockeying for position around people that should have started much farther back in the pack. If this wasn’t crazy enough, my ONLY two pet-peeves about running were in abundance.
(1) YOU’RE WEARING THE SCHWAG SHIRT OF THE RACE YOU ARE RUNNING… Dude, don’t be that guy.
(2) When you are running a race with friends (I don’t care if 50 of your closest friends are there) DO NOT run more than two abreast. It’s rude and you blocked all of Madison Street, Washington Park, and Washington Ave.
All my claustrophobia and and annoyances aside, the end was decent. I did finish with a good time, I got a jumbo homemade lemonade, and there was a firetruck providing much needed sprinkler relief. That, and box of Freihofer’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, which I think Jon managed to eat most of!
Since this is nomeatbarefeet, I will say I think I did a pretty darn good job of being a VFF’s spokeswoman for the many people who asked about my shoes. Well… will I run it next year, perhaps but I am growing a fast fondness for the less known races, odd distances, and most of all trail races that I have had the pleasure to run 4 months into our journey.
