No Poo Take Two
by nomeatbarefeet
Quick little post, because I was so happy with the results…
Last summer I tried to ditch shampoo and conditioner (I use Desert Essence Organic/vegan shampoo) and go no ‘poo which consists of using baking soda and apple cider vinegar, and it didn’t work. If you do your research, you will find that people give all kinds of measurements, tell you it might take a month for your body’s normal scalp oil production to come into balance, etc. What I found was that I never got my ratios right, and I gave up… hey at least my shampoo wasn’t chemical based, so I was kind of winning….
Now that we are involved in the LDP, I decided to give it another go, because heck… it’s cheaper, healthy and if it works, would make me less worried about buying shampoo (because with the LDP if I buy it and don’t like it, I have to use it… see original LDP post for why). I ultimately decided to give it another go, because I ran into these new ratios from Whitney at Eco-Vegan Gal.
Here using her ratio guidelines I did this…
- Put a tbsp of baking soda in a pint ball jar
- Put a tbsp of quality Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar in a pint ball jar
- Got in the shower
- Added the full two cups water (about 1 pint) in the baking soda jar, poured it slowly on my head and really scrubbed my scalp. Rinsed.
- Added the full two cups water in the ACV jar and poured it over my ends only really avoiding the roots. Rinsed.
My hair looks and feels great!!! Maybe these new ratios will be my no ‘poo savior!!! Will keep you posted!

Did you smell like ACV? Just curious.
Nope. I gave my hair a thorough rinse and no smell. I even had my husband smell my hair and he didn’t smell anything. Some people do add I little essential oil, but I didn’t want to add any.
I just started 3 days ago and my hair is so greasy I feel like giving up.
Sophia, from all I have read, it can take weeks to get over the transition phase, and I honestly didn’t make it this far the first time I tried. I have done some searching and think you should look at these two blogs http://fulfilledhomemaking.com/no-poo-shampoo/ and http://www.uniquelynormalmom.com/2011/06/2-years-of-no-poo-questions-pictures.html The first site shows her pictures as she advanced through the weeks, the second site has FAQ. I am a teacher so I really don’t want to deal with a greasy phase (should’ve probably waited until summer), I also do bikram yoga and sweat like crazy, but I am still going to see if I can make it work, maybe try to make it 4-5 weeks then see if I want to continue… good luck sticking it out. I also heard that the more you wash with BS/ACV the longer your transition will be. Most people that start this eventually give up the BS and ACV, so you could try washing with those as little as possible, it might accelerate your transition.
