Herban Cowboy Deodorant Review

For a number of years now I have tried to use deodorant that did not contain any aluminum. This wasnt easy. But it was made easier when I found the Herban Cowboy line of products. They began as the world’s first green grooming line for men, and while they started small  they have not grown into an internationally recognized company.

Herban Cowboy is significant for a number of reasons:

  • One of the first companies to have a certified organic facility.
  • They use “natural, food-based ingredients”: Their products are %100 vegan and are approved by PETA
  • Contains no aluminum, no propylene glycol, and no triclosan. (Read this article to know why you might not want these things in your body.)
  • They donate to, and are corporate members of, the National Arbor Day Foundation

I use the Forest deodorant (which Katie says makes me smell quite good.)

So, how does a %100 vegan deodorant do? Pretty good—in fact, I love it. Now remember: there are no “drying” ingredients in deodorant (i.e., propylene glycol), as such, your armpits are not going to be dry in the same way that a conventional anti-persperant might make them. So you might have to apply this a few times over the course of the day. But hey, I love this smell. More importantly: Katie loves this smell. Most conventional deodorants turn my stomach (and hers). This is the only scent that I put on my body (I’m not a cologne kinda guy). And to be honest, I don’t mind having to apply it more often during the summer; I don’t even mind smelling a little sweaty in between applications (which usually happens when I am running around behind the counter at work—it’s really hot trying to make frappuccinos!). We all sweat—get used to it. Plus, not to be sexist, but men sweat—we are a sweaty bunch. Us men that workout; us men that run trails—yeah we sweat a lot.

I really like the Herban Cowboy Forest deodorant. The smell is great, plus it is %100 vegan and contains no harmful chemicals. Everything is all natural, and it has been made with the environment in mind. If you want to give it a try, there are number of locations that carry it (including Target, Walgreens, Drugstore.com, and Amazon); though the most common scent is “Dusk,” so you might have to search online for the Forest scent. (I actually have the Herban Cowboy Dusk Shaving Cream which I really enjoy.)

Side Note: If you can’t get Herban Cowboy products or you still want to use a conventional deodorant that does not have all the nasty chemicals, checkout the Arm & Hammer Essentials Fresh. It has “natural plant extracts to absorb and fight odor” and it “does not contain aluminum, parabens, colorants or animal-derived ingredients.” It is a bit cheaper, though the smell is not my favorite (I believe Katie described it as a “middle-school scent”). However, during the summer I do turn to it from time to time because the baking soda absorbs a fair amount of sweat.

So there you have it. The Herban Cowboy Forest deodorant and the Arm & Hammer Essentials Fresh. Both %100 vegan; both alternatives to putting harmful chemicals into your body.
