Mardi Gras – Queen Cake
It is that time of year again; that’s right, Mardi Gras is here! It never matters what the rest of your life is like, it is always a good time to “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” The past few years have seen us make King Cakes, but this year we decided to make the rather less known Queen Cake. Ok, so this is less known because it isn’t really a thing. But someone made it up, and posted the recipe. More of a breakfast cake, it involves making a larger than life cinnamon roll, slathering it with hunks of gooey glaze, and then topping it with blueberries, bananas and kiwis (representing the colors of Mardi Gras: purple, yellow and green). The one thing we forgot to do was bake a bean into the cake (supposed to be a tiny plastic Jesus). Maybe next year.
Finally, to further honor the day here is the lasted album from New Orleans’ own Tuba Skinny, whom we discovered busking the streets of the French Quarter back in 2010. This group just epitomizes what New Orleans is all about. Enjoy!
