Sara Geurts, 31, suffers from a rare skin ailment, but that doesn’t stop her from loving herself and spreading body-positive messages to everyone who needs them. She has chosen to grin brighter than her situation and to share her experiences growing up differently. “You’re beautiful, and you can achieve whatever you want,” Geurts says.

Sara Geurts was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease when she was just ten years old. It inhibits collagen formation, resulting in frail skin with wrinkles at a young age. The illness is also associated with significant joint pain and fragile bones. When discussing her early life, Geurts reveals that when she was 10, her prognosis nearly ended her hopes of becoming a model.
A beauty campaign completely changed her life.
Geurts submitted her tale to the Love Your Lines campaign in 2015. The initiative highlights skin “imperfections.” People were sending in photos and stories about their situations. Geurts’ story was approved and shared through the #LoveYourLines campaign.
She admits that her complexion was her biggest insecurity in high school and that she tried to cover it up. She claimed that she didn’t want to discuss it and that she “was living a lie.” Her tale isn’t just about her; it’s about the millions of other people who are suffering with their own mentality and body image.
