James Gunn Shares Heartening Update About New DCU Batman Movie’s Release Plan

James Gunn has shared a positive update for The Brave and the Bold’s release date. The upcoming movie will reboot Batman for the new DC Universe. While not many details about The Brave and the Bold’s story have been revealed so far, the movie will be directed by The Flash’s Andy Muschietti and focus on Bruce Wayne getting to know his son, Damian. Now, the DCU Batman reboot has received an exciting release date update.

Following The Batman’s strong reception, Reeves is using DC’s new Elseworlds projects, such as The Penguin series, to establish a whole The Batman universe. The sequel to Robert Pattinson’s debut as the Dark Knight, DC’s The Batman – Part II, will be released on October 3, 2025.

When announcing the slate of projects that were part of the DC Universe’s Chapter One, Gunn revealed that he wanted to have two DC Studios movies released every year. Based on that, The Brave and the Bold will not be making it to the big screen in 2025. The year will be the first to see a DCU movie, with Gunn’s Superman: Legacy debuting on July 11.

A key DC movie, though not part of the DCU, pushes The Brave and the Bold out of 2025. Reeves’ The Batman – Part II will be release that October. The flick fills Gunn’s promised quota of DC films per year, and due to the movie also focusing on DC’s Dark Knight, makes it impossible for another Batman film to be released. The Brave and the Bold could then arrive in theaters in 2026.

No DCU projects are dated beyond 2025. However, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow should take one of DC’s two 2026 slots. The Supergirl film cast Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, with Ana Nogueira penning the script and a rumored filming start for Fall 2024. With both The Brave and the Bold and Swamp Thing already having a director attached, it remains to be seen which film will claim DC’s other 2026 slot. Based on that, The Brave and the Bold could introduce the DCU’s Batman in 2026 or 2027.
