Per Deadline, Madame Web is looking at a drop to the tune of 64% compared to its premiere weekend in theaters. The film will drop from the No. 2 spot to No. 4 by pulling in an estimated $5.56 million for the weekend. It previously opened to $15.3 million. At this rate, Madame Web is on track to reach $35 million with its domestic total by Sunday, and with international box office numbers, it will be sitting at around $60 million. Given that the film’s budget reportedly surpassed $100 million, and considering additional marketing costs, Madame Web appears to be a major money-loser for Sony.
There is a bright side to this bad news for Madame Web. While its second weekend in theater saw a big drop, it is still not the worst that has been seen in recent months from a big-budget comic book adaptation. The Marvels, which is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had seen a 78% decline with its second weekend. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe itself has also seen a bigger drop with second weekend box office numbers as well, as Morbius fell by 74%.
Madame Web Has Been Hit With Bad Reviews
What’s worse for Madame Web is the critical response, as it has become the lowest-rated movie of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe on Rotten Tomatoes. It currently sits with a score of 13%, lower than the previous record-holding score held by Morbius at 15%. The film does have a comparatively much better number with its audience score, though it’s still mixed at 56%.
For what it’s worth, working on the movie was a remarkable experience for Dakota Johnson. She recently spoke with CBR about how exciting it was to portray a live-action incarnation of a Marvel character for the movie. It’s such a departure from hre previous roles, and that helped attract Johnson to the project.
“It’s really exciting, and such a fun experience, and such a great film to be a part of,” Johnson said. “I never thought that I would be in a superhero movie! I love that her superpower is her mind, and it was just such a great experience to bring it all to life.”
On her three co-stars (Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor), Johnson added, “It was so much fun to work with them! They really became a group of real friends, and they bonded really fast. And whenever they were on set, it was an added energy that was just fun, joyful and lovely.”
