Guardians star discusses MCU villain recast hopes post-trilogy

Speaking to io9, Drax actor Dave Bautista revealed that he wants to be recast as an MCU villain. Bautista has been clear in the past that his time as Drax has ended, which he reiterated in the new interview; however, if Marvel wants to recast him in a bigger role, such as “an ominous villain,” then he would love to do it. With other MCU actors having played multiple roles, Bautista might just get his wish in one of Marvel’s upcoming movies. Check out the full quote below:

No, no. When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax. I still have a relationship with Marvel. I’ve seen Kevin Feige again, Lou [D’Esposito] as recently as two weeks ago. And they know that I would be up for a role. I love the universe—the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan. So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I’d be all over it. I just would like the opportunity to do a bigger role, a different role. Maybe a deeper role. I’d love to have the opportunity to play, like an ominous villain in the superhero universe. Yeah. But never. I’m not done with it. But my journey with Drax is over.

Bautista was entertaining as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and his other MCU appearances; however, the actor was noticeably undersused. While Bautista’s comedic abilities were often put on display, the actor has shown in some of his roles outside the MCU that he can excel with more dramatic events. If he gets recast as an MCU villain, Bautista could tap into the full scope of his acting skills.

Dave Bautista as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy stood looking surprised

Galactus is heavily rumored to be the main villain of Marvel Studios’ anticipated The Fantastic Four. The character is a giant humanoid entity who is known as the Devourer of Worlds. Based on Bautista’s desire to play an ominous villain, the actor would likely be game to put his spin on the powerful Marvel character. Bautista has the voice to make Galactus a fearful foe and would get to play a character devoid of comedy, offering a nice contrast to Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax.

To use his comedic talents allied to his dramatic chops, Bautista could be an interesting choice to play Mister Sinister when the X-Men arrive in the MCU. The villain likes to operate in the shadows and manipulate those around him, which would allow for the actor to have fun in the role. It remains to be seen if the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise star will continue in the MCU in a new role or follow Gunn to the new DCU, where Bautista is heavily rumored to play the Batman villain Bane.
