James Gunn has announced that his DC Universe movie, Superman: Legacy, has now been renamed to just “Superman” – as well as celebrating the movie beginning principal photography today.

He also shared a glimpse at David Corenswet’s Superman suit, confirming which “S” logo he’s decided to go with for the movie, as well as confirming the inspiration behind the logo.

While responding to a fan on his Threads account who asked the DCU boss what the “inspiration behind the suit” was, Gunn simply confirmed by replying with one name: Alex Ross.

The artist is known for designing the Superman of “Kingdom Come”, something that had been speculated to be the case after star Isabela Merced shared a tease on her Instagram.

Now, judging by the image shared by the Superman director combined with the confirmation behind the design, it’s clear that the suit design was indeed inspired by the aforementioned iteration of the character.

However, it’s still unclear if Gunn will be taking any other inspiration from Kingdom Come in terms of character and plot, it could simply just be for design purposes.

Interestingly, this announcement was made on Superman’s birthday – however, Gunn says that he didn’t even plan for that.

In his post, he said: “Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday (!)”

He continued in a reply: “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025. Happy Birthday, Clark!”
