Florence Pugh’s New Black Widow Costume In Thunderbolts Continues A 6-Year MCU Trend

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts is currently in production, and a set video shows Yelena Belova’s (Florence Pugh) new Black Widow costume, which continues a six-year MCU trend. The MCU’s Multiverse Saga is far from over and still has a couple of characters waiting to be introduced and others who are about to take a bigger role. Closing Phase 5 of the Multiverse Saga will be Thunderbolts, which is bringing back previously introduced characters who, at some point, weren’t exactly on the side of the heroes.

The MCU’s Thunderbolts team is formed by Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ava Starr a.k.a. Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), John Walker a.k.a. U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), and Yelena Belova. Thunderbolts, then, follows a group of antiheroes who go on missions for the American government. Thunderbolts is currently in production, and Marvel shared a set video by Florence Pugh in which she showed her new costume, which follows a six-year-old trend and ties to the comic books.

Yelena’s New Black Widow Costume Continues A Trend From Infinity War

Yelena’s New Costume Pays Homage To Her Sister, Natasha

In terms of design, it’s similar to the one she wore in Black Widow and the costume her late sister, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), wore in Avengers: Infinity War .

Although the first image of the MCU’s Thunderbolts gave a taste of what Yelena’s suit in the movie could be like, the above-mentioned set video is the first look at her costume that Marvel has officially released. Throughout the short video, Pugh is in full Yelena costume, and it’s an army green suit, very different from her previous black or white and black suits in Black Widow and Hawkeye. However, in terms of design, it’s similar to the one she wore in Black Widow and the costume her late sister, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), wore in Avengers: Infinity War.

Natasha wore an updated version of her signature Black Widow costume in Avengers: Infinity War, with the addition of an army green and black vest with different belts, which Yelena used in Black Widow. Yelena’s Thunderbolts costume design is also reminiscent of the suits Yelena wore in Black Widow, which is expected as she’s now the one carrying the “Black Widow” mantle. Through this new costume, the MCU is paying homage to Natasha, honoring a suit that links both Black Widows.

Black Widow is set before the events of Avengers: Infinity War , meaning that the green vest is actually Yelena’s.

Why Yelena’s New Black Widow Costume Is Green In Thunderbolts

Yelena’s New Costume Could Be A Team Choice

Valentina, Ghost, Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, US Agent and Taskmaster as the MCU's first Thunderbolts team

The choice of army green for the suit might be linked to the team’s work with the government, thus pointing at it being the team’s color.

What stands out about Yelena’s new Thunderbolts costume is the color, as it’s not one seen before as part of the character’s color palette. The choice of army green for the suit might be linked to the team’s work with the government, thus pointing at it being the team’s color. The rest of the members of the Thunderbolts team could also be wearing army green suits now, though, of course, their costumes will have to keep what makes each of them unique (for example, in Yelena’s case, the Black Widow’s Bite on her wrists).

The colors of Yelena’s Thunderbolts costume could be hinting at a major twist in the movie.

However, it’s worth remembering that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is also involved in the Thunderbolts team, and she isn’t exactly an ally. In addition to her shady actions in the MCU so far, Valentina is known in the comics as Madame Hydra, and HYDRA’s signature colors are green and yellow – and Yelena’s new costume has a strange yellow logo. The colors of Yelena’s Thunderbolts costume could be hinting at a major twist in the movie, with the team working for the remains of HYDRA in the US Government, which wouldn’t be hard to believe given Valentina’s past.

Yelena’s Green Black Widow Costume Comics History Explained

Yelena’s Thunderbolts Costume Takes Inspiration From The Comics

Marvel Comics Natasha and Yelena Belova Thunderbolts costumes

Natasha’s Infinity War suit took inspiration from the comics, from a storyline in which she was acting undercover as Yelena Belova.

When Natasha’s suit got a new design in Avengers: Infinity War, it raised a couple of questions as it was very different from her previous black suits, pretty much as it’s happening now with Yelena’s Thunderbolts costume. Natasha’s Infinity War suit took inspiration from the comics, from a storyline in which she was acting undercover as Yelena Belova after the real one retired. After becoming a Super-Adaptoid by A.I.M and HYDRA, Natasha’s suit got a major upgrade: a dark green costume reminiscent of what Infinity War designed for her (and she was also blonde in the comics at that point).

This green suit is the one Natasha, as Yelena, wore during her time with the Thunderbolts team, so it’s fitting that the MCU’s Yelena has now been given an army green suit. It’s to be seen if this is the only suit that Yelena Belova will wear in Thunderbolts or if she will have more, as well as what the rest of the team’s suit will look like and if they could be hiding some dark secrets, possibly linked to Valentina’s true intentions.
