The DCU’s First Team-Up Movie Gets Casting & Script Update From James Gunn

The Authority live-action movie gets a new DC Universe update by James Gunn in terms of its casting and writing process. The DCEU movie timeline is getting replaced by a brand new DC Universe as DC Studios attempts to get a fresh start at an interconnected superhero franchise. The first film that is coming out of DC Studios is Superman, which Gunn wrote and is directing, featuring David Corenswet as the next Man of Steel.

As Gunn’s Superman movie is currently rolling, DC Universe fans are eagerly wanting updates on the other DC movies and TV shows that are in the works. When asked by Threads user Fahim Mia when he would “cast the rest of the Authority members,”Gunn gave the following response:

We won’t green light a film until we have a finished script we’re happy with and, in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished. This is why some projects are moving faster than anticipated and others more slowly. It’s always gonna be quality first no matter what.

Gunn’s The Authority Response Could Lead To DCU Release Changes

While time will tell whenever The Authority will start adding new cast members, this response gives a better idea of how Gunn’s DC Universe may change various release dates. When DC Studios initially revealed their slate of movies and TV shows for the new DC Universe, Superman was the only film to get a release date, as the script was essentially done at that point. However, the other DC Universe movies were not given any specific release dates, as each script was in various stages.

One of the upcoming projects that are currently casting is the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, as the screenplay by Ana Nogueira, has officially been completed, meaning Milly Alcock’s film could potentially be the next film to come out after Superman. However, depending on whichever film progresses quicker afterward, it’s possible something like James Mangold’s Swamp Thing may be slated before Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and The Bold movie or vice versa. Until Gunn reveals which DC Universe movie has its script finished next, time will tell what film will be released in what order.

It’s currently unknown who is writing The Authority screenplay for DC Studios.

Even though The Authority movie may be a few years away, Gunn’s Superman film will be featuring at least one of the members, with The Engineer set to appear. Whether or not Superman will be a direct setup for The Authority remains to be seen, as it’s unclear if other members will be showing up in the story. Hopefully, more news on The Authority will emerge later this year.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
