Montreal Getaway

“Find the time to getaway, even if it is for a night.”

I can’t tell you how many people made this recommendation to me when I told them about the fact that we were expecting little Nut. The tough thing about this is that Katie is a teacher, and getting time away is challenging. Luckily, we live close to Montreal (only an hour and a half) so I decided to have us shoot up there for a night. We dropped our little fur-man off at Katie’s sister’s house on Friday and late the next morning we packed and set out. We happily discovered that a new bypass section of highway had been opened right after the town of Bedford cutting up to town of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. This made the trip up super quick…until we hit single-lane construction and sat in traffic.


We headed back to one of our favorite places, Aux Vivres, to get a bite to eat before checking into the B&B. It really is great going to a completely vegan eatery, not having to worry that we have to amend the dressing or the creamer or the dessert. Katie has said that she might stick with the same thing she got last time (the Grilled Tofu Cesaer Salad), which she did; I opted for the Mexicali Bowl. I got a coffee (and then an espresso), Katie got a Chai (which delicious and had the most absolutely amazing soy foam I have ever seen!). Finally, because why the hell not, we decided to split a Banana Chocolate Pie. Lunch? Lunch was delicious.



The B&B I found was called Casa Bianca (a vegetarian B&B), and it was located right next to the Parc du Mont-Royal (a Frederick Law Olmsted park, like Central Park in NYC). The owner was kind enough to bend her rules and let us stay for only one night. So after lunch we headed there and found this little note taped to the front door with instructions getting in/out of the place. It was really lovely.

Then we headed out for a walk through the park before dinner.


Montreal has a plethora of great spots to eat, but the one I feel stands out is ChuChai. Emphasizing Thai food and specializing in faux-meats this place is incredible. I decided to try a faux-beef curry while Katie stuck with a faux-duck curry. Now, I said this the last time we ate there, but I have no idea how they get the taste and texture of meat but it is almost scary. The shred of the “beef”; the oiliness of the “duck.” Nuts. It is sort of crazy to wonder how they get the texture and taste of each “meat” to turn out unique and different. True skill. We also had an egg roll appetizer and for dessert we shared a Lemon Coconut Cake, some Chocolate Mousse, and each of us had a decaf espresso.



Our trip culminated in a trip to the magical country of IKEA. We had some stuff to get for Baby Nut and Nutsery so we headed over to the west side of Montreal to see what the all the fuss was about. Let me just say that a first time in IKEA is tough enough; add to that that everything was in French and the experience was a bit overwhelming……at least at first. Once we got a hang of things we quickly searched for what we needed, although we had this weird feeling that we would get done and 7 hours would have passed (like a time vortex or something). Happily, though, we finished shopping in under 2 hours and then headed back home.

This was a great time spent with just the two of us (although we did express our sadness over missing our little Arlo). I hope that it won’t be too long before we get back up to Montreal, but if it is we went out with a bang.

Montreal – A Vegan Food Adventure: Aux Vivres & Chuch

Last weekend Katie and I finally took the plunge and made the drive up to Montreal, which, from Saint Albans, it is only an hour and forty minutes (depending on the border crossing). I couldn’t believe how close it was—it beats out the 3 hour drive to Albany, the 6 hours to Syracuse, or the 7+ hours to Rochester. Its closer than Boston or NYC, and it has lots of great vegan food.

We decided to eat lunch at Aux Vivres and have dinner at Chuch Bistro; in between we went to the Bio-dome.

There are lots of great vegan restaurants in Montreal, more than I thought possible. I want to thank Kristin from Will Travel for Vegan Food for posting about her visit and gastronomic adventures. We were sad to learn that our source of vegan donuts, Viva Vegan, closed last year. Needless to say we were crushed. But we will be returning to eat at some of the other great eateries that the city has to offer. When we do we will do another post about where we went and what we ate.

Jon’s meal: The Dragon Bowl: shredded beet, carrot, red cabbage, daikon, lettuce, sprouts, dulse, toasted sesame seeds, & grilled tempeh with Dragon sauce, all over brown rice.


Katie’s meal: BLT Caesar Saladlettuce, tomato, smoked coconut bacon, macadamia “parmesan” cheese, capers, & grilled tofu with Caesar dressing.


Basically all of Aux Vivres’ food is available to-go, including their sauces (read: Dragon sauce)!

Jon had the Khaio Wan Koung: green curry with red peppers, basil, zucchini, faux shrimp, in coconut milk.


Katie had the Kang Daeng Ped: red curry with peppers, basil, pineapple, and faux duck.
